Fanfic - Echoes of Eternity

Well I wasn't really sure where else to put it so this seemed like an appropriate choice. Note, there is some mature language, suggestive theme, blah, blah, blah, you get the gist. Without further ado...

Yu-Gi-Oh!
Echoes of Eternity

"It's a mistake to look too far ahead, the chains of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time..."

Note:
- * means the card is custom made
- ** means the card is from the CCG

Chapter 0:
Since the dawn of time, humanity has struggled against the limitations placed upon it by the world through evolving, transcend their weaknesses, and defying the nature of the world. Yet humans are intrinsically limited by the range of their visions, the scope of their imaginations, and the nature of their mortality. How could humans ever hope to grasp the chains of eternity?

- Α -

- December, 2012 -
- Underground Research Facility -

A man wearing in a highly polished military attire stood staring at a large screen as dozens of people in lab coats attended to the occasional whirring noises of surrounding machinery. The screen displayed a seemingly endless expanse of decrepit buildings falling into ruin. A man wearing tattered robes partially covered by ragged bandages was at the focus of the display, surrounded by a circle of mangled and smoldered bodies with swirling flames cackling by the edges.

One of the scientists turned to address the uniformed man. “Sir, the preparations are finished. We are ready to proceed with operation Ragnarök.”

The man inhaled uneasily and started rubbing his forehead. He retracted to the confines of his thoughts and pondered over the implications of the operation. The name was based on the same prophecy from Norse mythology which foretold of the final battle to end all battles, end all wars, and end the world. The world would be consumed in a fire that would purify all its faults and a new world will rise out of the ashes of the old.

“Director, the convergence signals are starting to fluctuate. If we want to stabilize the dimensional fissure, we have to do it now.”

The director cleared his throat and exhaled deeply. “Gentlemen, never before in the history of mankind has anyone been burdened with such power, such responsibility. We are on the verge of unlocking the secrets of the universe and changing the fate of worlds because of the efforts of heroes. Never forget the sacrifices that must be made for us to realize our dreams.”

After a moment of silence, the director turned to the scientist by his side. “Professor Holtzman, you may proceed with the operation. Send subject seven.”

A section of the screen’s display started condensing and swirling abruptly.

- Ruined City, The Dimensional Fissure -

A man clad in dark mechanical armor walked through the fluctuating space just before it dissipated. The man raised his left arm in front of himself. Strapped on his arm was an ebony duel disk.

The duelist in robes addressed the man that had just appeared. “No matter how many more of you come, I’ll defeat you. I’ll never give up, and I’ll defeat you all!”

The man ignored the duelist’s outburst and activated his own duel disk. The robed duelist did the same causing the field between the two duelists to light up in a holographic display.

Duel Start
Duelist 1: (5/0/0) – 8000
Duelist 2: (5/0/0) – 8000

The robed man drew one card. “I’ll go first by summoning ‘Eternal Firebird – Dawn’!” A majestic bird with crimson-orange feathers that seemed to be lit with some viscous fluid descended upon the field with a flaming swirl. (4/1500/1200).

‘Eternal Firebird - Dawn’ *
Monster | FIRE | **** | ATK - 1500| DEF – 1600
Winged Beast | Effect: When this card is Normal Summoned, send the top 4 cards of your Deck to the Graveyard and inflict 500 damage to your opponent's Life Points for each FIRE monster sent to the Graveyard by this effect. When this card you control is returned to the Deck, draw 1 card.

The robed man picked up the top five cards of his deck and inserted them into his duel disk’s graveyard pile. “There were two fire monsters. You lose one thousand points.”

Duelist 1: (5/1/0) – 8000
Duelist 2: (5/0/0) – 8000 -> 7000

“I barely felt anything,” stated the second duelist as he shrugged it off, “You’ll have to do better than that.”

“As you wish,” replied the robed duelist, “I return my firebird to my deck by the effect of ‘Eternal Phoenix – Salvation’ from my graveyard to special summon itself!” A blazing phoenix with radiant yellow feathers erupted onto the field. (6/2100/2500).

‘Eternal Phoenix - Salvation' *
Monster | FIRE | ****** | ATK - 2100| DEF – 2500
Winged Beast | Effect: During your Main Phase, you can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard by returning 1 FIRE monster you control to your Deck. When this card is Special Summoned, return 1 FIRE monster in your Graveyard to your hand. Once per turn, you can return 1 FIRE monster in your Graveyard to your Deck to negate the activation of a card effect that targets a FIRE Monster you control and destroy it.

“With its effect,” stated the duelist, “I’ll return ‘Bird of Burning Embers’ to my hand. Then I’ll set one card and I end my turn.”

Turn 2
Duelist 1: (6/1/1) – 8000
Duelist 2: (6/0/0) – 7000

The second duelist smirked. “Not bad, but not nearly good enough. I summon ‘Beast King Barbaros’.” A gigantic lion-headed beast with a tangled mass of muscle for a body and a panther’s body for a base materialized. (8/3000 -> 1900/1200).

‘Beast King Barbaros’
Monster | EARTH | ******** | ATK – 3000| DEF – 1200
Beast-Warrior | Effect: You can Normal Summon or Set this card without Tributing, but its original ATK will become 1900. You can Tribute 3 monsters to Tribute Summon this card. If you do: Destroy all cards your opponent controls.

“Then,” continued the duelist, “I’ll set two cards and end. Your go.”

Turn 3
Duelist 1: (6/1/1) – 8000
Duelist 2: (3/1/2) – 7000

“And you mock my moves?” asked the robed duelist with a hint of amusement. “I activate ‘Trade-In’ to send ‘Eternal Phoenix – Conflagration’ to the graveyard and draw two cards. Next, I summon ‘Bird of Burning Embers’ from my hand.” A swirl of flames cackled onto the field and turned into the shape of an immaterial bird. (4/1000/1800).

‘Bird of Burning Embers’ *
Monster | FIRE | **** | ATK - 1000| DEF – 1800
Winged Beast | Effect: If this card is removed from the Field by a card effect, Special Summon 1 Level 4 or lower FIRE monster from your Deck during the End Phase. Once per turn, if this card would be destroyed, it is not destroyed.

“Activate ‘Chain Disappearance!” declared the second duelist.

‘Chain Disappearance’
Trap | Normal
When a monster(s) with 1000 or less ATK is Summoned: Banish that monster(s), then your opponent banishes all cards with the same name as that card(s) from their hand and Deck.

“Chain,” responded the robed duelist, “With ‘Blazing Firestorm’!”

‘Blazing Firestorm’ *
Trap | Counter
Activate by selecting 1 face-up Winged Beast-Type FIRE monster you control. Negate the activation of a card effect that would affect monsters you control and inflict damage to your opponent's Life Points equal to half the selected Monster's DEF.

Duelist 1: (5/2/1) – 8000
Duelist 2: (3/1/2) – 7000 -> 6100

“Then,” continued the robed duelist, “I return ‘Bird of Burning Embers’ to my deck to special summon ‘Eternal Phoenix – Conflagration’ from my graveyard.” The flaming apparition swirled out of existence. The floor beneath where the apparition was cracked open, and a large elegant phoenix with long wings and tail feathers set on fire rose from the depths. (8/2400/2700).

‘Eternal Phoenix - Conflagration’ *
Monster | FIRE | ******** | ATK - 2400| DEF – 2700
Winged Beast | Effect: During your Main Phase, you can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard by returning 1 FIRE monster you control to your Deck. When this card is Special Summoned, mill the top 5 cards of your Deck and destroy 1 Spell or Trap Card on the field (max. 2) for each FIRE Monster sent to the Graveyard.

“Summoning response,” declared the second duelist, “With ‘Skill Drain’!”

Duelist 1: (5/2/1) – 8000
Duelist 2: (3/1/2) – 7000 -> 5100

‘Skill Drain’
Trap | Continuous
Pay 1000 Life Points. The effects of all face-up Effect Monsters on the field are negated.

“Fine,” stated the robed duelist, “I’ll set one card and end. During the end phase, the effect of ‘Bird of Burning Embers’ activates letting me special summon another copy of it from my deck into face-up defense position.”

Turn 4
Duelist 1: (4/3/1) – 8000
Duelist 2: (4/1/1) – 5100

The armored duelist smirked as he drew his card. “I activate my own ‘Trade-In’ by discarding ‘Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon’ to draw two cards. Next, I activate ‘Law of Nature’ by tributing ‘Beast King Barbaros’ to destroy all your monsters!”

‘Law of Nature’ *
Spell | Normal
Tribute 1 EARTH monster you control. Destroy all monsters your opponent controls with an ATK that is less than the tributed monster’s ATK. Gain Life Points equal to the tributed monster’s ATK.

The beast-warrior turned into a surge of light causing all the monsters on the robed duelist’s side of the field explode in a rain of pixels except for ‘Bird of Burning Embers’.

Duelist 1: (4/1/1) – 8000
Duelist 2: (3/0/1) – 5100 -> 8100

The armored duelist slid a card from his hand into his duel disk. “I activate ‘Card Replacement’ by paying one thousand life points to add a second copy of ‘Beast King Barbaros’ from my deck to my hand.”

‘Card Replacement’ *
Spell | Normal
Pay 1000 Life Points. Select 1 card in your Graveyard and banish it. Add 1 card with the same name as the banished card from your Deck to your hand.

“I summon my second ‘Beast King Barbaros’. Then I activate ‘Monster Reborn’ to bring back ‘Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon’.” A gigantic lion-headed beast with a tangled mass of muscle for a body and a panther’s body for a base materialized. (8/3000/1200). Followed by it, a rusting but intricately-designed mechanical dragon burst out of the ground. (8/3000/2000).

The second duelist raised his hand forward. “I enter my battle phase and attack you with both monsters!”

“Response,” announced the robed duelist, “With ‘Phoenix Wing Wind Blast’! I discard ‘Reparation’ to return your ‘Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon’ to the top of your deck! Then, ‘Reparation’ lets me draw one card and gain one thousand life points.”

‘Reparation’ *
Trap | Normal
When this card is sent to the Graveyard, draw 1 card and gain 1000 Life Points.

“I’ll chain with ‘Lifeforce Shield’ to prevent my monster from being removed!”

Duelist 1: (5/1/0) – 8000 -> 9000
Duelist 2: (1/2/1) – 8100 -> 7600

The beast-warrior (8/3000/1200) raised its lance and pierced through the flaming apparition, dissipating the flames and destroying ‘Bird of Burning Embers’ (4/1000/1800). The mechanical dragon (8/3000/2000) attacked directly causing the robed duelist to step back from on the brunt of the assault.

Duelist 1: (5/0/0) – 9000 -> 6000
Duelist 2: (1/2/1) – 7600

“I end my turn” stated the armored duelist.

Turn 5
Duelist 1: (6/0/0) – 6000
Duelist 2: (1/2/1) – 7600

“I activate ‘Mystical Space Typhoon’ to destroy ‘Skill Drain’. Then, I activate ‘Rise from the Ashes’ by returning ‘Bird of Burning Embers’ from my graveyard to special summon ‘Eternal Phoenix Conflagration’.” The phoenix with flaming wings rose from the grave again. (8/2400/2700).

‘Rise from the Ashes’ *
Spell | Normal

“Then,” continued the robed duelist, “Conflagration mills five cards from my deck. I’ll return Conflagration to my deck to special summon ‘Eternal Phoenix – Purification’ from my graveyard!” The swirling phoenix disappeared as a more brilliant streak of golden flames with different shades of radiance materialized into the shape of another phoenix. (8/2300/2900).

‘Eternal Phoenix Purification’ *
Monster | FIRE | ******** | ATK - 2300| DEF – 2900
Winged Beast | Effect: During your Main Phase, you can Special Summon this card from the Graveyard by returning 1 FIRE monster you control to your Deck. When this card is Special Summoned, mill the top 5 cards of your Deck and destroy 1 monster on the field (max. 2) for each FIRE Monster sent to the Graveyard.

The duelist picked up the top five cards of his deck and slid them into his duel disk’s graveyard slot. “I count two fire monsters which means both your monsters are destroyed!”

The armored duelist covered himself as both his monsters burst in a scarlet conflagration.

“Now,” continued the robed duelist, “Purification will attack you directly!”

Duelist 1: (2/1/2) – 6000
Duelist 2: (1/0/0) – 7600 -> 5300

Fiery swirls shot out at the armored duelist, burning the surface of their contact. The duelist stumbled back, unsettled by the assault.

The robed duelist slid two cards into his duel disk. “I’ll set two support and end my turn.”

Turn 6
Duelist 1: (2/1/2) – 6000
Duelist 2: (2/0/0) – 5300

“I activate ‘Pot of Foolish Greed’!”

‘Pot of Foolish Greed’ *
Spell | Normal

“Next,” continued the armored duelist, “I activate ‘Mindless Re-animation’ to special summon ‘Beast King Barbaros’ from the grave.” A lance broke out of the ground followed by the beast-warrior wielding it. (8/3000/1200).

‘Mindless Reanimation’ *
Spell | Equip
Select 1 EARTH monster in your Graveyard and Special Summon it. Its effect(s) is negated.

“Then I summon ‘Salvaged Ogre Lord’ from my hand!” A monstrous mechanically reconstructed green beast-warrior wielding an enormous spiked club materialized. (8/2800/1500).

‘Salvaged Ogre Lord’ *
Monster | EARTH | ******** | ATK - 2800| DEF - 1500
This card is also treated as Machine-type. You can Normal Summon this card without Tributing. If this card is Summoned this way, pay 1000 Life Points during each of your End Phases. If this card is in your Graveyard during your Standby Phase, you can discard 1 card to add this card to your hand.

The duelist placed his last card onto his duel disk. “I summon ‘Sacrificial Ox’ and tribute it to summon back ‘Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon’!” The mechanical dragon resurrected alongside the two beast-warriors. (8/3000/2000).

The robed duelist tightened in anticipation of upcoming onslaught. “You’ve spent up your hand just to fill your field with beaters. You’re getting desperate.”

“Say what you want, but if my attack goes through, I win this turn!”

“That won’t be happening,” replied the robed duelist as he raised his hand causing his left side set card to reveal itself, “I activate ‘Icarus Attack’ by tributing ‘Eternal Phoenix - Purification’ to destroy your ‘Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon’ and ‘Beast King Barbaros’!” The phoenix burst into a shower of flames engulfing the two targeted monsters in the conflagration.

“I’ll attack you directly with my remaining monster, go nature’s fury!” The reconstructed ogre charged at the robed duelist and skewered him to the ground causing the duelist to shriek out in pain.

Duelist 1: (3/0/1) – 6000 -> 3200
Duelist 2: (0/1/0) – 5300

“With that,” said the armored duelist, “I’ll end my turn. During my end phase, Ogre Lord costs me one thousand points.”

Duelist 1: (3/0/1) – 3200
Duelist 2: (0/1/0) – 5300 -> 4300

Turn 7
Duelist 1: (4/0/1) – 3200
Duelist 2: (0/1/0) – 4300

“I activate ‘Call of the Haunted’ to bring back ‘Eternal Phoenix Purification’!” The multi-shaded golden phoenix rose from the depths once more in a fiery spectacle. (8/2300/2900). The duelist slid the top five cards of his deck into his graveyard once more.

“Why didn’t you use it before?”

“I didn’t want to take any chances. Using it on my turn allows me to play through any outcome.”

“Two fire monsters were sent to the graveyard meaning both of our monsters are destroyed.” The two monsters were consumed by a raging torrent of flames. “Then, I summon ‘Eternal Firebird – Dusk’!” A dark, smoldered firebird with bright glowing edges descended onto the field. (4/1200/1800).

‘Eternal Firebird – Dusk’ *
Monster | FIRE | **** | ATK - 1200| DEF - 1800

“I’ll return it to the deck to bring out ‘Eternal Phoenix - Salvation’.” A blazing phoenix with radiant yellow feathers erupted onto the field. (6/2100/2500).

“Next,” declared the duelist, “I’ll attack you directly with Salvation!”

Duelist 1: (3/1/0) – 3200
Duelist 2: (0/0/0) – 4300 -> 2200

“To finish up,” continued the duelist, “I’ll activate the ‘Swallow’s Nest’ by tributing Salvation to special summon ‘Eternal Phoenix - Ascension’ from my deck!” The radiant phoenix disappeared to be replaced by an even brighter phoenix composed entirely of swirling fire. (6/2200/2500).

‘Swallow’s Nest’
Spell | Quick-Play
Tribute 1 face-up Winged Beast-Type monster you control to Special Summon 1 Winged Beast-Type monster from the Deck with the same Level as the Tributed monster.

The robed duelist brought out the card from his deck. “The mandatory effect of Ascension summons ‘Eternal Phoenix - Salvation’ again.” The phoenix that had just disappeared ascended alongside the swirling flames. (6/2100/2500).

“What? That’s enough to -”

“To end this once and for all. Ascension, attack him directly with the flames of eternity!” The phoenixes flared up into a giant rupture and hailed throughout the field, reducing the surroundings into smoldering piles of rubble.

Duel End
Duelist 1: (2/2/0) – 3200
Duelist 2: (0/0/0) – 2200 -> 0

A voice suddenly shouted out, “Now! Activate the delta-terraforming sequence!”

The armored duelist received the command and pounded on his duel disk causing the disk to emit a blinding glow. The duelist laughed hysterically as his surroundings started shaking sporadically.

The robed duelist turned to him in shock. “You! What are you doing?”

“The final solution – for every action there must an equal and opposite reaction to maintain equilibrium. To maintain universal equilibrium, your world must die for ours to live.”

“What? No!”

“It’s too late now! You thought defeating me in a duel would have defeated our organization. No, your psychic powers were only harnessed as energy. You were the key to initiating Ragnarök. This is only the beginning, the dawn of a new era made possible by our sacrifice.” The duelist continued laughing manically before erupting into a flash of light.

“What the –” The robed duelist was left speechless as the sky around him seemed to be torn apart as if the very fabric of reality was disintegrating. Then, the world was consumed in flames.

- Underground Research Facility -

The director turned off the screen’s display and turned to address the scientist by his side. “Professor Holtzman, what is the outcome?”

“Project Ragnarök was a success. The energy was successfully bonded to the duel disk.”

“Good. As the flames of eternity scorch through the sins of the world, a new dawn rises from the ashes of the old…”

Note, I'll probably be making some changes to this chapter.
